In the 2021 season, the 14 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) programs played 28 Power Five (P5) teams during the regular & bowl seasons! They struggled against this/that level competition, going 7-21 vs P5 programs (5-16 in the regular season and 2-5 in the post-season). In the 2022 season, the ACC has scheduled 24 P5 teams. That said, the Big Ten, who like the ACC has 14 teams, play just 11 P5 opponents. The SEC also has 14 members and play only 16 P5! The B-10 & SEC together take on 27 P5’s squads, while the ACC, by themselves play just 3 fewer, twenty four (24)!

Our focus here has to be limited to the ACC’s Non-Conference (NC) games. The Atlantic Coast Conference is always the last of the Power Five (P5s) leagues to provide their conference schedule! At the time of the writing of this blog, the ACC has only provided their NC & helmet schedules (who conference teams are playing with-in the league, but do not provide the dates of the games. As a result, SCFP cannot publish the ACC Conference schedule! Please note; the ACC complete schedule is now available!

Lets begin in the Atlantic Coast’s Conference, Atlantic Division by identifying their P5 opponents and putting a number to the G5 & FCS teams they will play in 2022.

The Atlantic Division vs Power Five’s (P5), Boston College welcomes Rutgers to Chestnut Hill and then travels to Indiana to take on Notre Dame, (BC & ND are the only two (2) Catholic Universities playing football at the FBS level)) Clemson plays ND in South Bend and hosts in-state rival, South Carolina while Florida State battles LSU, at a Neutral site (New Orleans) on Sept. 4th & Florida in the ‘Chomp & Chop’ Game, Louisville closes out its season against the Kentucky Wildcats, while NC State has invited the Red Raiders of Texas Tech to Raleigh, NC, to do battle @ Carter-Finley Stadium, and finally, Syracuse has challenged the whole State of Indiana (almost) as it takes on Purdue & Notre Dame. Wake Forest takes on two P5s, Vanderbilt, in the Music City & West Point, @ home, on Truist Field! The Atlantic Division has seven (7) members, and will kick-it-off against 12 P5 opponents! Impressive!!

The Atlantic Division plays a G5 opponent on nine (9) occasions and have scheduled FCS teams on six (6) dates (please note: Clemson has one (1) more NC opponent to schedule) for a total of 17 scheduled, with one (1) to go, when complete, 18 games (based on playing 10 P5s)! The Atlantic Division has to schedule 28 NC games, as does the Coastal Division, to reach their NC contests allowed, 56 would be the magic number!

The Atlantic Division’s schedule breakdown is 28 NC games; 12 vs P5, 9 against G5s, 6 with FCS squads, & one (1) TBD!

The Coastal Division vs P5: Duke plays @ Northwestern & at Kansas, Georgia Tech hosts Ole Miss and travels to Athens, GA, to take on in-state rival & defending national Champs, UGA, while Miami travels to the Great State of Texas to battle Texas A&M. North Carolina is desperate to improve its 2-20 showings against, God’s Team, Notre Dame, Pitt stays in the great city of Pittsburgh, welcoming West Virginia, & Tennessee. Virginia engages the Big Ten, Illinois, in Charlottesville @ Scott Stadium, and finally, Virginia Tech, Battles its neighbors from the “Mountain State’ West Virginia! The Coastal Division plays ten (10) P5 teams, with every member of the division playing, @ least, one Power Five program and Duke, GT, & Pitt playing 2 each!

The Coastal Division’s schedule breakdown is 28 NC games, with 10 dates vs P5, eleven (11) against G5s, six (6) with FCS squads, and Duke has an NC game to schedule!

The ACC, as a whole, play 22 P5 opponents; twelve (12) of the twenty two (12) will be played in ACC stadiums, Nine (9) as true road games, and one (1) at a Neutral Site!

The 2022 ACC Non-Conference Season looks like this, 56 NC games, 34 are home contests, while 19 are road battles, one (1) at a neutral site, and 2 games TBD!

4th Conference up, is the often ignored and regularly disrespected, Big 12!

There are ten (10) Football Bowl Subdivision Conferences (AAC, ACC, Big12, Big Ten, C-USA, MAC, MWC, PAC 12, SBC, & SEC) and only two have organized themselves without divisions, the AAC (American Athletic Conference) the the Big 12 (B-12)

In 2010, here is a list of the teams that comprised the B-12: Baylor, Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M, & Texas Tech. One year later (2011), the B-12 had gone from 12 members to 10 universities, as Nebraska left for the B-10 & Colorado headed west to begin play in what would become the PAC 12 (Utah from the Mountain West Conference also joined what was then known as the PAC 10)! The B-12 kept their marketing name (even though they had 10 not 12 conference programs) and did away with divisions, organizing themselves as one conference, where they played a round robin schedule (every team in the league played every other team!

Then in 2012, Texas A&M & Missouri left the Big 12 conference and joined the Southeastern Conference. The B-12 did not want to be left with eight (8) teams, so they invited Texas Christian University (TCU) and West Virginia to join their ranks. TCU & West Virginia began playing in the B-12 in 2012, both teams finished that season with identical records, 4-5 in conference play and 7-6 overall!

In 2021, came the shocker, Texas & Oklahoma, the bluebloods of the conference, announced they would be leaving the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference beginning July 1 of 2025! The Big 12 response was quick, they offered Cincinnati, Houston, Central Florida (all from the AAC) and the nations 2nd best Independent, BYU, an opportunity for membership in the Big 12. All four (4) accepted the offer and will begin playing in the conference no later than the 2024-25 academic year!

The Big 12 will be returning to divisional play in 2024 and once again, have 12 members, for the 1st time since 2010!

All that said: the Big 12 (the current B-12) plays 30 Non-Conference games and in 2022, 11 of the tilts are vs Power Five program, 11 vs G5s & 7 vs FCS teams for a total of 29 NC games. Baylor has yet to schedule a 3rd NC Game, since they play BYU on the road, look for them to schedule a weak G5 program or an FCS opponent. When they do so, the B-12 will have reached its allotted 30 game NC total!

Big 12 vs Power Five (P5) opponents, Baylor heads to Provo to take on BYU, Iowa State meanders east to Iowa City to do battle with in-state rival, Iowa, while Kansas hosts’ Duke on Sept. 24th. Kansas State resumes its border war, in Little Manhattan, vs Missouri, Oklahoma kicks it off vs an old Big Eight rival, Nebraska, at Husker’s Memorial Stadium, Oklahoma State, welcomes a PAC 12 opponent, Arizona State to Stillwater, OK, TCU lines in up against Colorado in Boulder, CO @ Folsom Field. Texas plays host to mighty Alabama, on Sept 10th, Texas Tech heads east to battle an ACC program, NC State, @ Carter-Finley Stadium, Raleigh, NC and finally, West Virginia takes on two (2) Power 5’s (ACC teams), both on the road, Pitt, in the ‘Backyard Brawl’ and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg VA, @ Lane Stadium. 

The Big 12 Conference plays a G5 opponent on eleven (11) dates and have schedule seven (7) FCS teams! Baylor has one game, yet, to schedule, a G5 or FCS program are far and away the most likely Candidate!

The Big 12’s schedule breakdown is 30 NC games, 11 vs P5, 11 against G5s and 7 games vs an FCS squad! Every team in the League plays, at least, one (1) P5, one (1) G5, and seven teams in the conference have schedule an FCS opponent. OU & Texas do not play an FCS program in 2022 and Baylor has one game to schedule for the coming season.

The Big 12 Conference plays 9 conference games and 3 Non-Conference (NC) games to reach their allotted regular season 12 game total. As a result, the conference has to schedules 30 NC games (10 teams X 3 NC Games = 30) to reach their conference total of 120 games (90 conference games + 30 NC tilts = 120 total games in the B-12).

The Big 12 plays 11 P5 opponents; none of these games will be played at a neutral site, four (4) will be contested in B-12 Arenas, & seven (7) of these games will be played as true road games! Of the seven (7) road games (three (3) will be contested on ACC fields, one (1) in an Independent Stadium (BYU’s Lavell Edwards Stadium), two (2) in Big Ten Houses, & One (1) in PAC 12 territory)!

The League plays 11 G5 and 7 FCS all @ home, except for TCU, who plays @ SMU, some likely hurt feelings with the Mustangs, in that, the B-12 did not offer an invite to the Dallas-based team, an old Southwest Conference member, during the latest realignment? While Kansas travels to Houston to take on a future B-12 opponent!

The 2022 B-12 Non-Conference season looks like this, 30 NC games, 20 are home contests, 9 are road battles, & one (1) team & site to be determined!

The PAC 12 had two (2) teams reach the ten (10) win threshold in 2021, Oregon (10-4) in the North Division and in the South Division, Utah, also went 10-4! Of the twelve (12) teams playing in the League, half (six {6} squads) of them qualified for the bowl season (Arizona State, UCLA & Utah from the South and Oregon, Oregon State, & Washington State out of the North)! That said, their bowl results can best be described as a ‘Train Wreck‘. The P-12 went 0-5 in the post season; (Oregon State lost to Utah State, 24-13, Oregon was outscored by Oklahoma, 47-32, Arizona State was stopped by Wisconsin, 20-13, Washington State fell to Central Michigan, 24-21, Utah’s defense missed the bus, losing to Ohio State, 48-45, and mercifully, UCLA canceled their date with NC State, due to Covid)! Their regular season performance vs Power Five (P5) opponents was better, but not by much, the conference took on 16 P5 opponents and managed only three (3) wins, an anemic 3-13 result! The PAC 12 lost seven (7) games to two (2) teams, BYU beat them 5 times (Arizona, Arizona State, USC, Utah, & Washington State), & Notre Dame played them twice (2), USC & Stanford fell to the Irish! They lined it up 9 times vs the 2nd best Group of Five (G5) Conference (the American is widely regarded as the best G5 league), the Mountain West and managed just 4 wins (4-5), a losing record to a G5 Conference. Further, they play, in the majority, the Big Sky Conference, when engaging FCS programs! PAC 12 played eight games vs the B-Sky and finished with 2 losses, completely unacceptable for a P5 Conference!

Our focus here is the PAC 12’s Non-Conference (NC) games!

The PAC 12 Conference plays 36 Non-Conference games in 2022!

Lets begin in the P-12’s North Division by identifying their P5 opponents and putting a number to the G5 & FCS teams they will play in 2022.From the North Division, California Travels to Indiana to take on Notre Dame, (ND is a founding member of the CFP system and is universally recognized as a P5 program) Oregon plays two (2) P5s in 2022, Georgia, at a neutral site (Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA) & BYU @ home, while Oregon State does not play a P5 in 2022, they do travel to Idaho, to take on Boise State! Stanford heads east, to the Great State of Indiana, to take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame and battles BYU @ home, Washington welcomes Michigan State, to Husky Stadium, while WSU travels to the Great State of Wisconsin to do battle with Bucky @ Camp Randall. The North Division six (6) members, with the exception of OSU, each play, at least, one (1) game vs a P5. Oregon & Stanford play two (2) P5 opponents, bringing the North Division’s total to seven (7) games vs P5 in 2022 regular season!

The North Division plays five (5) Group of Five opponents and six (6) FCS teams!

The North Division’s schedule breakdown is 18 NC games, seven (7) games vs P5, five (5) against G5s and six (6) with FCS squads! You like to see each member of a P5 Conference (or in this case, division) play at, least, one (1) P5 program in their NC schedule. The North, as a whole, meets that standard by playing 7 P5s in 22′!

The South Division vs P5: Arizona welcomes Mississippi State to Arizona Stadium, Arizona State travels to Stillwater, OK, to take on Oklahoma State, while Colorado kicks it off vs two (2) P5 teams, @ home against TCU and then, gets it on, in the great state of Minnesota, vs The Golden Gophers. UCLA’s schedule may be the weakest of any P5 program in the country in 2022, not only do they not play a P5, the fact is, the G5 teams they play, Bowling Green & South Alabama are among the weakest in their respective G5 conferences (MAC & Sun Belt) and their FCS opponent, Alabama State, is not a particular strong program in that subdivision! USC takes on ND, in college football’s greatest intersectional rival, & Utah travels cross country, to Gainesville, Florida, to get it on with Gators in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The South plays six (6) P5 teams, with every member playing one Power Five program, save UCLA who plays none (0) while Colorado lines it up vs two (2)!  

The South Division plays eight (8) Group of Five opponents and four (4) FCS teams!

The South Division’s schedule breakdown is 18 NC games, six (6) games vs P5, eight (8) against G5s, and four (4) with FCS squads!

The PAC 12, as a whole, will play 13 P5 opponents; six (6) of the thirteen (13) will be played in PAC 12 Stadiums, six (6) will be played as true road games, & one at a neutral site. PAC 12 teams will appear in one (1) Southeastern Conference Arena (Florida), in one B-12 Stadium (TCU’s Amon G Carter Stadium), on two (2) B-10 fields, Wisconsin’s & Minnesota’s, & twice (2) at the House that Rockne built (Notre Dame)! The thirteenth P5 opponent will be Georgia, played @ a neutral site, Atlanta, GA’s Mercedes Benz Stadium!

The PAC 12 Conference plays 9 league games and 3 Non-Conference (NC) games to reach their allotted regular season 12 game total. As a result, the conference has to schedules 36 NC games (12 teams X 3 = 36) to reach their their conference total of 144 games (108 conference games; 12 X 9 = 108 + 36 NC tilts = 144 total battles in the PAC 12 Conference).

The PAC 12 plays 13 G5 and 10 FCS, all @ home, except for games played @ San Diego State (Arizona), @ Air Force (Colorado) & @ Fresno State (Oregon State) are P-12 teams, who travel to the above mentioned sites! Please note; all ten (10) FCS games are played in PAC 12 Arenas!

The 2022 PAC 12 Non-Conference Season looks like this: 36 NC games, 26 are home contests, 9 are true road battles, and one (1) is at a Neutral site!

The Big Ten East Division made a comeback in in 2021 with 3 (MSU 11-2, OSU 11-2, & Michigan 12-2) of its seven members winning 11 or more games. Of the ten FBS Conferences, eight of them have divisions (American Athletic Conference {AAC} & the Big 12 are not organized into divisions). That said, the Big Ten’s East was the only division that that had three (3) teams to win 10 plus games. Now before you say the rest of the division was weak, two (2) other teams from the East had winning records (Penn State & Maryland)! The Big Ten East was (is) the 2nd best division in all of college football, behind only the Southeastern’s West Division. With Iowa (B-10’s West Division) winning ten (10) games, the Big Ten was tied with the Southeastern & Mountain West Conferences to have four (4) teams win ten or more games!

The Big Ten Conference plays 42 Non-Conference games in 2022!

Lets begin in the B-10’s East Division by identifying their P5 opponents and putting a number to the G5 & FCS teams they will play in 2022.

From the East Division, Indiana Travels to Ohio to take on Cincinnati, (the B-10 recognizes Cincy as a P5 opponent for scheduling purposes, they were, once upon a time, in the Big East) Maryland does not play a P5 in 2022 while Michigan hosts’ UCLA on Sept. 10th. MSU heads west, to the Great State of Washington, to take on the Washington Huskies, OSU welcomes God’s Team, Notre Dame, to the Shoe, while PSU travels south to do battle, on the Plains, with Auburn, and finally, Rutgers journeys to the Baked Bean State to cook, boil, & bake Boston College. The East Division’s seven (7) members, with the exception of Maryland, each play one (1) game against a P5 opponent!

The East Division plays a G5 opponent on thirteen (13) occasions and have scheduled FCS teams on two (2) dates. For the limited purpose of this blog, we are counting Cincinnati as a P5, although, please note; they are identified as G5 (AAC member / green dot on the B-10 conference schedule page) on the conference schedule!

The East Division’s schedule breakdown is 28 NC games, 6 vs P5, 13 against G5s and 2 with FCS squads! Maryland is the only team from the East that is not playing a P5 while IU & Rutgers are the only 2 clubs that have scheduled FCS opponents!

The West Division vs P5: Wisconsin welcomes Washington State to Mad-Town, Purdue enters the Great State of New York and lines it up against “Running Back U” (Jimmy Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, Larry Zunker to name a few) the Syracuse Orange , Northwestern stays home and gets it on in the Academic Bowl vs Duke. Nebraska entertains long-tine Big Eight & Big 12 rival, Oklahoma, Minnesota stays in the North Star State and kicks it off vs a PAC 12 representative, Colorado, Iowa engages in its annual battle, with in-state rival, Iowa State, in Iowa City (it’s all about Iowa), and finally, Illinois, welcomes the descendants Jamestown (UVA) to the Land of Lincoln! The West plays seven (7) P5 teams, with every member playing one Power Five program!

The West Division plays seven (7) Group of Five opponents and seven (7) FCS teams!

The West Division’s schedule breakdown is 21 NC games, and has perfect symmetry, seven (7) games vs P5, seven (7) against G5s and seven (7) with FCS squads! I do not remember seeing an NC schedule breakdown with this type on balance in the years (2009 to present) that I have entered games!

The Big Ten, as a whole, play 13 P5 opponents; eight (8) of the thirteen (13) will be played in B-10 stadiums. the remaining Five (5) will be played as true road games; one (1) in an AAC Arena (Remember, the B-10 & SEC will count some teams that are housed in G5 Conferences … as P5 opponents for scheduling purposes), one (1) in an Southeastern Conference, one (1) in a PAC 12 House, & two (2) in ACC realms)!

The Big Ten Conference plays 9 league games and 3 Non-Conference (NC) games to reach their allotted regular season 12 game total. As a result, the conference has to schedules 42 NC games (14 teams X 3 = 42) to reach their their conference total of 168 games (126 conference games + 42 NC tilts = 168 total battles in the Big Ten Conference).

The B-10 plays 20 G5 and 9 FCS all @ home, except for Maryland, who plays @ UNC Charlotte, in North Carolina, on Sept. 10! Please note; if you go to SCFP site, the B-10 page will show 21 green dots (signifying a Group of Five opponent) while the B-10 counts Cincinnati as a Power Five (P5) for scheduling purposes only, we do not count Cincy as a P5! On SCFP , we count only BYU & Army as P5 equivalents (ND has always been part of the P5 numbers). So, on SCFP page, you will see 12 yellow dots (signifying a P5 opponent) on the Big Ten Conference Page (not 13 as reported here) and 21 green dots (signifying G5 opposition) not 20! Sorry for the confusion!!

The 2022 Big Ten Non-Conference season looks like this, 42 NC games, 36 are home contests while 6 are road battles!

As we move into the NFL Playoffs and with sports best tournament, the Final Four in college basketball on the horizon, here is peek over the horizon, the so called ‘look down radar’. A sneak preview of the 2022 college football schedule.

1st up, is the Mighty Southeastern conference!

On Sully’s College Football Page, we use a system of color coding to make the reading of a particular team’s, strength of schedule, easily recognized and understood!

The color Red is used to identify conference games, Yellow, for Power Five (P5) opponents, Green, to signify Group of Five (G5) teams, and finally, we use Light Blue for the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The FCS can offer up to 63 scholarship (not more than 63, yet can offer fewer), while the Football Bowl Subdivision ( P5 & G5) must provide 85 scholarships or lose their status as an FBS program!

In should be noted, the terms P5 & G5 are not NCAA language, but rather the constructs of five conferences (ACC, B-10, B-12, PAC 12, & SEC) and Notre Dame! No one is quiet sure of the origin of these terms, Power Five & Group of Five, they seem to have evolved over time, suffice to say, they are not NCAA Terms!

That said: the Southeastern Conference plays 56 Non-Conference games and in 2022, 16 of the tilts are vs Power Five program, 27 vs G5s, & 13 vs FCS teams!

Lets begin in the West Division by identifying their P5 opponents and putting a number to the G5 & FCS teams they will play in 2022.

From the West Division, Alabama Travels to Austin to take on Texas, Arkansas heads west to take on BYU (the SEC & B-10 count BYU & Army as P5 opponents for scheduling purposes) while Auburn hosts’ Penn State on Sept. 17th. LSU opens its season @ Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans vs Florida State, Mississippi State travels west to battle Arizona, while fellow Mississippian, OLE Miss, travels to Georgia to take on Georgia Tech in Atlanta, and finally, Texas A&M welcomes the Miami Hurricanes to College Station. The West Division’s seven (7) members each play one (1) game against a P5 opponent!

The West Division plays a G5 opponent on fifteen (15) occasions and have scheduled FCS teams on six (6) dates.

The West Division’s schedule breakdown is 28 NC games, 7 vs P5, 15 against G5s and 6 with FCS squads! Texas A&M is the only team in the West that is not playing an FCS opponent!

In the East Division, Vanderbilt travels to North Carolina to take on Wake Forest, Tennessee heads North to battle Pitt, South Carolina stays home and gets it on with in-state rival, @ Clemson. Missouri crosses a state line, to line it up vs Kansas State, Kentucky stays in the Blue Grass State and kicks it off, @ home, against Louisville, Georgia takes on two (2) P5s, Oregon @ a neutral site (Atlanta) & Georgia Tech @ home and finally, Florida, just like its friends from Georgia, plays two (2) P5s, 1st the Gators welcome Utah to the ‘Sunshine State’ and then travel from Gainesville to Tallahassee, to “lace-em-up” vs Florida State, in the Chop or Chomp Game! The East plays nine (9) P5 teams, every member plays one (1) with the exception of Georgia & Florida, who battle two (2) P5s!

The East Division plays a G5 opponent on twelve (12) occasions and have schedule seven (7) FCS teams!

The East Division’s schedule breakdown is 28 NC games, 9 vs P5, 12 against G5s and 7 with FCS squads! Every team in the East plays, at least, one (1) P5, one (1) G5, & one (1) FCS program!

The Southeastern Conference plays 8 conference games and 4 Non-Conference (NC) games to reach their allotted regular season 12 game total. As a result, the conference has to schedules 56 NC games (14 teams X 4 = 56) to reach their their conference total of 168 games (112 conference games + 56 NC tilts = 168 total blood-baths in the Southeastern Conference).

As a conference, they play 16 P5 opponents; two (2) of these games are at Neutral Sites, Five (5) are to be played in Southeastern Stadiums, & Nine (9) of these games will be played as true road games; (two (2) in B-12 Arenas, one (1) in an Independent Stadium, one (1) in a PAC 12 House, & four (4) in ACC territory)!

The SEC plays 27 G5 and 13 FCS all @ home, except for Vanderbilt, who plays @ Hawaii (I get that, I would like to go with them) yet, I’m confused as to why Commodores are traveling to Dekalb, IL to take on Northern Illinois, a MAC team? These games are usually best thought of as ‘cash for a home date/win’ as a result, the P5 teams rarely travel! I do not believe, since I started the site (2009), I have ever seen a P5 program, play two (2) G5s on the road in the same season (one, yes … two, 2 never). Interesting!

The 2022 Southeastern Non-Conference season looks like this, 56 NC games, 43 are home contests, 11 are road battles, & 2 are scheduled at neutral sites!

The 2021 Las Vegas Bowl will be played on December 30, 2021, with kickoff scheduled for 9:30 p.m. The game will air on ESPN @ 9:30 and will be the 29th edition of the Las Vegas Bowl (the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the Covid Pandemic). Sponsored by a roofing distribution company, the game will be officially known as the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl:. Teams: Wisconsin (B-10) 8-4 vs Arizona State (P-12) 8-4

Sully’s CFP Game Simulator is a statistical analysis / predictor of how these teams will perform, based solely on their numbers, when they face off on the gridiron! Keep in mind, these stats were established against different teams and conferences and these differences must be taken into account to get a complete picture when attempting to predetermine a winner. If you are interested in how the Simulator works … read this part … if not … skip it! The process used is, say Notre Dame is playing Wisconsin … we take ND’s total yards on offense, add it to the number the Badgers give up on defense, we get a total and then divide the total by 2 to get an average. We then invert the process, we now take Wisconsin’s total offense, add it to what the Irish give up on defense, get a 2nd total, and then divide that number by 2, to get the second average! The greater number (with the exception of Turnovers, lower # wins) is then determined to have the advantage (please note …. a statistical advantage). Sully Says: What a great game, B-10 Power vs PAC 12 Speed! The Badgers are coming off their most disappointing performance of the 2021 campaign, a 24 13 loss to Minnesota, while the Sun Devils are fresh off a, 38-15, win over their in-state rival, Arizona! ASU is going to place 7 to 8 defenders in the box (to stop the run), play man vs UW receivers, & force Mertz to beat them! That was what the Gophers did and Mertz did not respond to the challenge; 21/38 for 171 yards (55% completion rate), 4.5 YPA, 0 TD & 1 INT …. He needs to step up in this game or Bucky will get stepped on!

There are 42 Bowl Games in 2021 (not counting the CFP Championship Game) and the exact number of teams, (84) that were needed, qualified, 42 games = 84 teams! To qualify a team must win a minimum of 6 games. It should be noted, one (1) of the wins can be against an FCS team (63 scholarship program)!

The first game between Army /Navy was played in 1890, with Navy emerging as the winner, 24-0. They have played every year since, with the following 10 exceptions.  

In 1893, following a Navy victory, an incident after the game almost led to a duel between a Rear Admiral and Brigadier General. As a result of that event, President Cleveland called a cabinet meeting, after which, the Secretary of the Navy, Hillary A. Herbert and Secretary of War, Daniel S. Lamont, issued orders that the respective Academies could play only home game. These orders effectively defused the situation, as the game was placed on hold (1894-1898) for five years.

The teams resumed playing in 1899, Army won 17-5!

In 1909, a cadet, Eugene Byrne, died in a game against Harvard and as a result, Army cancelled the rest of their season.

During WW I, the game was put on hold in 1917 and again, in 1918 and finally, in 1923-24, the games were cancelled when the Academies could not agree on eligibility rules for the players.

“The Event” was moved to Philadelphia in 1899 and has been played in the “City of Brotherly Love” (Greek Origins) for most of the 20th and 21st Centuries. The host sites include the following cities and number of games played in the respective venues: Philadelphia: 83 games, New York: 11 Baltimore: 4, East Rutherford: 4, Annapolis & West Point: 7 (1890 through 1893, 1942, 1943, & 2020), & Chicago (1926), Pasadena (1983), & Princeton (1905) each have hosted a game!

This weekend’s game marks the 123th meeting between the Academies, Navy leads the series 62 (wins) 53 (loses) and 7 (ties).

In 1926, the game played @ Chicago’s Soldier Field to honor those who fought in WW I, Navy entered the game undefeated and Army having lost to only ND, the teams battled to a 21-21 tie in front on 100,000 Americans. Navy was awarded the National Championship!

In both the 1944 & 1945 Games the teams entered the contest ranked 1^st & 2^nd in the country. In the 1944 game, Army won 23-7 and was crowned National Champion. In the 1945 game Army entered the game unbeaten while Navy had battled to 7-0-1 record (tied with ND 6-6 in Cleveland) the Cadets won the game (32-13) the National Championship for the 2^nd year in a row! Army would win their 3^rd (in a row) & final, National Championship in 1946, finishing 9-0-1 (tied ND, 0-0, @ Yankee Stadium) while taking down the Midshipmen, 21-18!

Since the 1963 season, Army has finished the regular season ranked, in the top 25, just twice, in 1996, 24^th & in 2018, 22^nd, while Navy has finished a season ranked only once, from the days of Staubach, in 2015, @ 21!    

The teams have entered their annual battle with both squads having winning records only four times since the 1963 game, 1996, 2010, 2016 & 2017 season. This year, Army enters the game with an 8-3 record, while Navy has struggled, coming in @ 3-8 in the 2021 season!

The days of this game having national championship implications or the teams being national powers have long since faded into history. High academic standards, potential NFL career opportunities, weight/height limits, and military commitment upon graduation have greatly diminished the talent pool for the Academies. Yet the intensity of the play, the games significance for the players, and the day, date & time the NCAA schedules the ‘Event’ if anything, have grown!

Navy won the game 14 straight times, 2002 from 2015 and some of those games have not been close. In 2006, Navy won, 26-14; 2007, 38-3; 2008, 34-0; 2009, 17-3; & in 2010, 31-17. That said, the game in 2011 was 24-21 in the 4th Quarter, before Navy kicked a field goal to secure the 27-21 win and with exception of 2013, a 34-7 Navy win, the games have been decided by single digits, 2012, 17-13; 2014, 17-10, and 2015, 21-17!

Then, in 2016, Army finally broke through and won the annual battle 21-17. The Black Knight would then win three (3) of the next four (4) games (2017, 14-13, 2018, 17-10 & 2020, 15-0)!

The boys & girls in the desert have made Army a 7.5-point favorite in 2021!

Having a brother-in-law, and two nephews, who are West Point Graduates, I have to say, I’m good with that spread, and respectively, mind you, respectively … Go Army!

SCFP was really happy that the NCAA agreed to move this game back a week. America needs to celebrate the young men and women, who are willing to make the commitment and sacrifices a military career demand(s).

It is absolutely fitting that the last regular season college football game be played between Army & Navy and played on a weekend, when all other FBS programs are idle and, hopefully, honoring their gridiron peers!

Americans will / should always honor the participants in this game, …. period… no question! Yet, for it to remain America’s greatest sports rivalry, Army needed to step up in 2016 and put an end to that 14-year nose-bleed. They did and have now won 4 of the last five! Now it is time for Navy to step up, Don’t give up the ship, Damn the Torpedoes, Scratch one flattop and you may fire when ready Gridley! Go Navy!  Go Army!
