Rooted in Wausau since 1888, The Mint Cafe has a long history of warmly welcoming the community. 

The story of Mint Cafe dates back to 1888, when its earliest predecessor opened as a saloon on Third Street. During Prohibition, it became The Mint, trading spirits for soft drinks, tobacco, and cigars. Fred Brand operated the cafe, and Adam J. Brand joined him by 1927. In 1940, the Mint Cafe moved to its present location in downtown Wausau. Today, the owners, Joe & Sherry Schulz, continue to protect the traditions, welcome guests by name, and foster a community that feels like home.

Through every era, from saloon to cafe, from one generation of owners and guests to the next, The Mint has succeeded by balancing change with familiarity. It’s a story of resilience, community, and everyday hospitality. It’s a place to eat good food served by people who care, where Wausau has gathered for more than a century.
