Big Upsets Week 8
(5) Florida State 51 – (3) Clemson 14
MVP: “Famous” Jameis Winston, QB Florida State
Although I did predict Florida State to defeat Clemson in possibly a high-scoring, shootout type of game, I did not by any means expect the Seminoles to wrap up the game by halfway through the 3rd quarter! Florida State’s redshirt freshman QB Jameis Winston made life miserable for the Tigers’ defense; torching them for 444 yards and 3 touchdowns through the air and accounted for one short score on the ground. Besides from Winston’s performance Saturday night that made him look beyond his years, the story of the game was Clemson QB Tajh Boyd’s poor night at home. Boyd only went 17-37 for 156 yards, a lonely touchdown pass and 2 interceptions; also accounting for a fumble in the first quarter which was returned for a touchdown, putting FSU up 17-0 on the #3 team in the country. In this blowout game, the final nail in the coffin came in the early 4th quarter. With the Seminoles backed up on their own goal line, the Tigers’ defense let “Famous Jameis” throw a short lob pass to TE Nick O’Leary that went for 94 yards before finally being tacked around the Clemson 5 yard line. O’Leary is also the grandson of golfing legend Jack Nicklaus; showing a lot more running talent than his grandpa could ever display. (But then again, who couldn’t gash the Tigers’ defense last Saturday night?) Overall, this game provided Jameis Winston with a legit Heisman moment to show off when he is voted in as this year’s Heisman Trophy winner. (Yes, Jameis Winston will win the Heisman Trophy this year; you heard it hear first!)
