Game of the Week in the Big 12

I can’t speak for you, but for me, I am really confused on how Texas defines conference membership. They seem to follow a logic of… one for you… 3 for me…. and we’re good!! Even in the mighty SEC; Vanderbilt gets what Alabama brings. In the Big Ten the Hoosiers get the dough ($) that the Buckeyes & Badgers earn… because they are in the same conference, Texas!!!. I’m guessing that the Big Ten Network is banned in the Longhorn State… or wait … maybe it is dubbed over by the Longhorn Network… Texas, please redefine conference or go the way of the Irish… Independent forever baby!!!

Right now the Big 12 is the second best conference in the country… only the SEC has a better product on the field! WAIT… I got it!!! Let’s stay together….. ok wait… how does Texas define together?

On to the Games: # 6 Oklahoma State @ # 8 Texas A&M. These teams are not only members of the same conference but were also in the old south division and thus have met 5 times in the past five years. In 06 & 07 A&M won both times by a point; 34-33 & 24-23. In 08, the Cowboys pounded the Aggies 56-28 & won in 09 36-31. Last year State won a wild affair 38-35. Oklahoma State can score on anyone, Justin Blackmon is the best wide receiver in the country and QB Brandon Weeden may have the best arm in the nation. The question is their Defense… Oklahoma State gave up 34 to Louisiana Lafayette in week one & 33 to Tulsa last week. A&M is much better than these teams defensively and has as much or more offensive talent. The Cowboys put a 61 spot on ULL and 59 on Tulsa… those #”s will not happen this week. The Aggies, who are favored by 3 to 4.5, will find a way in a close game @ Home!

Game of the Week in the Big East

Since we already have spoken to the LSU / West Virginia game, let’s turn to the next best game involving a Big East Team, Pitt vs Notre Dame. These teams have met 3 times in the past 5 years with Pitt winning twice once in 08 36-33 in 4 overtimes & again in 09 27-22. Last year the Irish prevailed 23-17, although Pitt was in the Red Zone 3 times in the 1st half and scored only 3 points and had the ball twice in the last 3 minutes of the game down 6. Pitt comes into the game 2-1 with unimpressive wins @ home over Buffalo 35-16 & Maine 35-29 and a 4th quarter meltdown loss @ Iowa 31-27. ND has also been less than as advertised with a home loss to South Florida 23-20 & a 35-31 debacle @ Michigan. Last week… they righted the ship … somewhat… @ home against an overrated Michigan State 31-13. Look for ND to have their way against Pitt’s hapless pass defense. ND is favored by 6 and should with this game by at least two scores.

Game of the Week in the SEC

Hard to identify “the game” in this conference as they seem to have several each and every week. But I’ll try…

Alabama hosts Arkansas. Bama is 3-0 & the nations’ second ranked team while the Razorbacks are also 3-0 & ranked 12th in the Coaches Poll. Great defense & a heavy dose of Trent Richardson and Eddie Lacy allow the Tide to Roll @ home…

# 3 Ranked LSU Tigers @ the # 16 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers. Last year the 20-14 game was decided by a punt return. This is LSU’s first trip ever to Morgantown. While no one would mistake the LSU staff for rocket scientists… They most often find a way to win… it is called talent… specifically defensive talent….While Morgantown will be rocking early…. not so much late… However; LSU must start this night time affair ready to play or….! Yet if I were you, I’d look for an emotional & hard fought win for the Tigers…

And finally: ain’t it great to see the” intellectuals” of the SEC… Vanderbilt… @ 3-0!! They go to South Carolina this week and will meet (if they get close enough to tackle him) the nations leading rusher, Marcus Lattimore. While a lot of us are pulling for James Franklin, Vandy’s new head coach and don’t forget that the Commodores have won twice vs USC in the past four years… in 07 @ Carolina 17-6 & again in 08 @ home 24-17! Even though SC has won the past 2 years, the Commodores clearly have the “Old Ball Coaches” full attention … especially given the Gamecocks close call, 24-21, with Navy last week. Sorry James…Carolina BIG….

ACC Game of the Week

Two great games in the ACC this week. First: 13th ranked Florida State takes on the 22nd ranked Clemson Tigers. Both teams were in big games a week ago, FSU lost to the # 1 ranked Oklahoma Sooners 23-13, while Clemson was knocking off the defending national champion Auburn Tigers 38-24. FSU won a year ago @ home 16-13, look for EJ Manual & Co. to find a way… FSU marches on… All true, unless Manual does not play…Please pay attention to his status…

The 2nd big game in the conference has 3-0 North Carolina, the 25th ranked team in the country taking on 3-0 Georgia Tech, the 24th ranked team. Georgia Tech leads the country in Total Offense and are throwing the ball more effectively this year… The Rambling Wreck handle UNC @ home…

Big Ten Game of the Week

Undefeated Michigan takes on a 3-0 San Diego State. While Michigan has the 2nd leading rusher in the Big Ten, QB Denard Robinson, San Diego State will counter with RB Ronnie Hillman, the 2nd leading rusher in the country. Brady Hoke will have no issues identifying Aztecs players as he was their coach a year ago. Look for Michigan to prevail in a close game in the Big House!

Russel Wilson Gives Badgers Hope For Something More

Back on June 27th, 2011 Brett Belema and the Wisconsin Badgers received a commitment from what may have been their most important prospect to date, as well as the key to taking them to the next level of college footballs’ elite. Wisconsin, coming off of an impressive Rose Bowl season that saw them win the Big Ten title, returns 14 starters, and is primed to make yet another run at the Big Ten title, and perhaps for the first time ever, a nation title. The Badgers, while having had many solid quarterbacks over the past decade, have not seen a signal caller of Russell Wilson’s caliber for some time, if ever. Wilson’s success at NC State came almost instantly, as he became the first ever freshman to earn 1st team all ACC QB honors when he passed for 1,955, with a staggering 17 to 1 touchdown to interception ratio. The very next year, Wilson set an NCAA record for passes thrown without an interception (379!), while throwing for 3,027 yards and 31 touchdowns. Even more impressive, Wilson managed to take his game to the next level yet again last year when he threw for an impressive 3,563 yards in route to becoming just the second Wolf-pack QB ever to manage 1,000 career rushing yards.

Russell Wilson Highlights

This sort of production is in sharp contrast to what Wisconsin saw from its’ last QB, Scott Tolzien, who threw for 2,705 yards and a conservative 16 touchdown passes. While these numbers are certainly solid, they pale in comparison to what Wilson has brought to the table in the past. Wilson is an extremely heady player that does not often make mistakes, while also possessing the ability to move around in the pocket, and if necessary, escape it. In fact, last year NC State saw Wilson rush for well over 400 yards, while also rushing for an impressive 9 touchdowns. This sort of play will fit in perfectly with a Badger offense that prides itself on rushing the football and attacking defenses with a massive offensive line. Given Wilsons’ ability, the Badgers offense should be able to keep the opposition off-balance with a vastly improved vertical passing game (Wilson has averaged an impressive 7.3 yds per attempt in his career), which will undoubtedly keep defenses honest, thereby taking away their ability to stack the box. Ultimately, if Wilson can put together another strong season, which at this point one would have no reason not to expect, the Badgers may be better equipped to make a run at the national title than they have ever been.

Note: It should come as no surprise that early last week Wilson was officially named the starting QB for the Badgers, as well as being voted the teams’ co-captain. By all accounts he has fit in tremendously with his new teammates, and it is obvious that they are absolutely behind him as their starting QB, as they should be. It is imperative that the Badgers offensive line keeps him healthy this year, especially considering the fact that back-up QB Jon Budmayr is out indefinitely with an injured elbow. After Russell Wilson there is a cliff in talent amongst the Badgers remaining QBs. If Wilson goes down, the rest of his team will likely come with him.
