SEC Review / Preview

TJL is a Blogger for Sully’s CFP

South Carolina 28 @ UCF 25

Last week in the SEC, South Carolina came out with a very slim and disappointing victory against UCF 28-25.  The Gamecocks had a total of four crucial turnovers and Dylan Thompson struggled through the air, throwing for 261 yards on 15 of 32, with one pick & no TD’s. When Connor Shaw was injured in the 1st Quarter, the offensive focus shifted from quarterback to running back play, as Mike Davis stepped in and led the way, with 167 yards rushing and 3 TDs.  South Carolina survives a very good UCF team, on the road, & with its starting QB, Connor Shaw, going down early in the 1st Quarter!

LSU 41 @ Georgia 44

This was expected to be, and was a great game from start to finish. A thriller between two top 10 teams from the SEC, but the question everyone was asking, did Aaron Murray have what it takes to win the big game?  Sully’s CFP certainly thought so! Throwing for 298 yards, 4 TDs, and 1 interception, he drove down the field and led Georgia to victory in the final minutes of the game.  Zach Mettenberger, also had a great game throwing for 372 yards, and 3 TDs.  This may have been the best game of the 2013 season, and proved beyond a shadow, that Aaron Murray could win the big game.

Ole Miss 0 @. Alabama 25

Both teams were coming into this game with a 3-0 overall record and 1-0 in conference play.  This game was all about running the ball with no passing TDs and below average passing yards. Alabama showed again why they have one of the best, if not the best, defense in the country, shutting out an AP Top-25 team that was averaging 29 points per game.  Alabama’s running (2 TDs on the ground & 254 yards rushing) & kicking game (3 FGs) pulled them to a big win over the Rebels.

SEC Blog

Sully’s CFP opens this week in the SEC with the big storyline being the suspension of Alabama’s star, defensive back, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.  Coach Nick Saban suspended him because he took money from Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach Corey Harris, who has been placed on adminislative leave. This exchange of money is a violation of the NCAA bylay 16.11.2.2. … which states: an institutional employee or a representative of the institutions athletic interest may not provide extra benefits or services … including a loan.  Saban did not comment on the details of the event or the duration of the suspension which is his practice.

Here are some things to watch for in the SEC for Week 6.

Mississippi State quarterback Tyler Russell returns from the sidelines after suffering a concussion.  Coach Dan Mullen says he plans to start him for this week’s game vs. LSU.  Another thing to watch for is how Georgia and LSU respond from last week’s emotional battle! Georgia needs to focus on a dangerous Tennessee team in Nashville, while LSU needs to forget their late loss to Georgia, which means little to nothing, if they continue to win games in the SEC West! .

Arkansas at Florida

Arkansas’ great running game meets up with Florida, Nation Best Rushing Defense!  Expect this to be a brutal, low scoring game, with Florida finding a way, 23-10, @ home.

LSU at Mississippi State

Mississippi State is a capable team, especially with Quarterback Tyler Russell returning to the starting line up. That said, LSU has too many playmakers, too much on the line, and too much talent for MSU.  The Tigers feast on the Bulldogs, 41-20, in Starkville.

Ole Miss at Auburn

Ole Miss is coming off a disappointing loss to Alabama, while Auburn had a bye-week to get ready & healthy for the Rebels, after experancing their first loss of the season to LSU, 35-21, on 9/21/13.  Ole Miss falls again, Auburn wins this game in their home stadium, Jordan-Hare, in the classic SEC showdown:  Auburn 31 Ole Miss 28.

Georgia at Tennessee

Georgia is coming off a big win vs. LSU, looking like one of the country’s best college football teams. Although Georgia might not have star running back Todd Gurley, they do have Keith Marshall! Take the Dawgs over the Volunteers in Nashville, 41-13.

Sully’s CFP: Six Pack of Winners; Week Six

Washington @ Stanford -7: Both teams come into the game unbeaten! Washington at 4-0, with impressive wins over Boise State, 38-6 & Arizona, 31-13 @ home; the Cougars also beat Illinois, 34-24, in Chicago @ Soldiers Field & an FCS team, Idaho State, 56-0, again, at home! Stanford  is also 4-0, having 2 wins over PAC 12 Teams, Arizona State, 42-28 & Washington State, 55-17 and solid wins against San Jose State, 34-13 & @ Army, 34-20. Washington did win last year’s game at Huskie Stadium, 17-13, however, that was their only win in the last five meetings. Sully CFP says: take Stanford at home and give the 7 points to the Huskies.

Clemson -13 @ Syracuse: Clemson heads to Syracuse with a perfect 4-0 record, among these wins is an impressive victory over SEC powerhouse, Georgia, 38-35.  Meanwhile Syracuse is 2-2 on the season, losing to two Big Ten teams, PSU, 23-17 & N-Western, 48-27. While the Orange have won 2 in a row neither of these wins is against a quality opponent,  Wagner, 54-0 & Tulane 52-17. The Tigers have to much speed and in too many places for the orange to slow down this offense. Sully CFP says: Give Syracuse the 13 @ home and  ride that Tiger!

TCU @ Oklahoma (Over 46.5): A 4-0 Oklahoma welcomes a 2-2 TCU to Norman. The Sooners are coming off a whipping of the Irish in South Bend, 35-21, while TCU hammered in-state rival SMU, 48-17. These offenses are getting on track and the 46.5 is simply not enough…. Sully CFP Says: Take the over to the bank!

G-Tech @ Miami -4.5: The Hurricanes head into their home game with a perfect 4-0 slate, while the Yellow Jackets buzz into Miami @ 3-1. The Ramblin Wreck’s first loss of the season came last weekend at home, to Virginia Tech, 17-10. Miami’s win over Florida, 21-15, is a clear indicator that Al Golden has his team rock’en & roll’en in 2013. The Canes know a win this week at home sets the stage (if both teams play up to their respective rosters abilities) for a November 9 showdown, with Virginia Tech, in Miami, to determine the Coastal Division Winner. Sully’s CFP Says: Take the Canes and give GT the 4.5 points!

LSU -9.5 @ Mississippi State: LSU has beaten MSST the last five times they have played and covered the 9.5 point spread in four of these five wins. LSU comes into the game off an emotional loss to Georgia, 44-41, in Athens last week end. In fact, that loss means little to nothing, if they win out in the division and beat Florida on October 12, they will be in the SEC championship game come the first Saturday in December. Their quest to win the SEC West begins in Starkville this week end. The Bulldogs will get the Tigers A game… Sully CFP Says: Take the Tigers and give the Bulldogs the 9.5 … LSU Rolls>>>

UCLA -5.5 @ Utah: UCLA’s road performance @ Nebraska clearly demonstrated that they can be down in a hostile environment and battle their way back to victory. Down 21-3 in Lincoln, the Bruins scored an amazing 38 unanswered points on their way to a 41 to 21 win! They enter Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium with a 3-0 record and are coming off a bye week to enhance their game preparation in time for the Utes. Meanwhile, Utah is 3-1 having won Utah bragging rights, beating both in State rivals, BYU 20-13 & Utah State, 30-26… & spanking Weber State, 70-7! The Utes sole loss was to Oregon State, at home, 51-48 in OT! Sully’s CFP Says: Take the Bruins and give the Utes the 5.5

Sully’s CFP is currently 15-15 against the spread

Sully’s CFP: Six Pack of Winners; Week Five

Navy -3 @ Western Kentucky: These teams have met twice in the past five years, 2009 & 2011, both Navy wins, 38-22 in 09 @ home & 40-14 in 011 @ Western KY. Navy sails in to Bowling Green at 2-0, with wins @ Indiana, 41-35 & at home vs Delaware 51-7. Western Kentucky is currently 2-2, having beat Kentucky 35-26 & Morgan State 58-17 while falling to Tennessee 52-20 and South Alabama 31-24. Sully’s CFP Game Simulator favors Navy in 6 of the eight categories assessed, including the projected score, Navy 39 Western Kentucky 28. Sully’s CFP Says: Take Navy and give Western Kentucky the 3 points!

South Alabama @ Tennessee -19.5: South Alabama is a relative newcomer to the FBS ranks. A current member of the Sun Belt Conference, USA is playing in its second full season as a member of the SBC and the FBS. Last year they won one game, beating Florida Atlantic, 37-34 in 2 overtimes, and won their biggest game as a SBC member on this past September 14, beating Western Kentucky 31-24. This recent win over WKU, who beat a SEC team, Kentucky, has sent a message to the Volunteers, be ready to play .. as USA is improving under their Head Coach Joey Jones’ leadership. The timing of this game could not have come at a worse time for the Jaguars.  Their recent win over an WKU, coupled with Tennessee getting hammered by Oregon 59-14 & a 31-17, passing by Florida, has left Butch Jones’ TU team in a foul mood. The Vols will cover the 19.5 points … no worries Sully’s CFP says: take Tennessee and give USA the points!

Stanford -9.5 @ Washington State: Mike Leach is improving this team, no question about that.  They are currently 3-1, with an impressive win over a struggling Southern Cal team! That said, any win by a WSU team over an USC unit …. is impressive, irrespective of what else may be going on …. especially when considering the recent history of these programs! On the other hand, Stanford is not struggling and enters the game as one of the nation’s best college football teams. Their dismantling of  a very good defensive team, Arizona State, 42-28, is a clear indicator that they can compete at the highest level. Sully’s CFP says: Take Stanford and give WSU the 9.5!

Ole Miss @ Alabama -16.5: The 3-0 Rebels come to Tuscaloosa to take on the nation’s #1 team, the 3-0 Crimson Tide of Alabama. The Tide has won the last four meetings, 2009, 22-3; 2010, 23-10; 2011, 52-7; & last year, 33-14. Bama covered the 16.5 spread in each of these wins, with the lone exception being 2010’s 23-10 victory. This year, Ole Miss has survived a good Vandy team in Nashville, 39-35, dismissed an FCS opponent, SE Missouri, 31-13 and then hammered Texas, 44-23! The Rebels defense can run with Bama’s receivers and the loss of offensive linemen Barrett Jones, D. J. Fluker & Chance Warmack has negatively impacted the Tide’s ability to control the LOS in the run game. Sully’s CFP says: Bama wins but does not cover, take Ole Miss and the 16.5!

Virginia @ Pittsburgh -6: These teams have not played in the past five years. Pitt was in the former Big East and is playing in its first season as a member of the ACC. The Panthers have won two in a row, beating New Mexico 47-29 & Duke, 58-55, and this after getting pounded by Florida State 41-13 on opening weekend. Meanwhile, Virginia comes in at 2-1 having beat a very good BYU team 19-16 to begin their season, then got hammered in week two by Oregon 59-10 and last week did the pounding, beating Big South team VMI, 49-0! Sully’s CFP says: take Virginia and the 6 points!

Oklahoma -3.5 @ Notre Dame: The Irish are a stunning 9-1 vs the Sooners. The teams hooked up last year with ND winning by a deceptive 30-13 score … the game was tied early in the fourth quarter @ 13 before the Irish put 17 unanswered points on the board. Oklahoma comes to South Bend with a 3-0 mark, with wins over ULM 34-0, West Virginia 16-7 & Tulsa 51-20 … all at home. This is the first time that OU has had to play in front of a hostile crowd, while the Irish played at Purdue (news flash … the Boilers do not like the Domers) and at Michigan, in front of 115,000 angry Wolverines. ND is 3-1, beating Temple 28-6, Purdue 31-24 & Michigan State 17-14! Neither team has an impressive win this year & the Michigan loss is looking bad based on the Wolves barely surviving Akron 28-24 & U-Conn 24-21! Sully’s CFP says: take the Irish and the 3.5 @ Notre Dame Stadium!

Sully’s CFP is currently 14-10 vs the spread!

Sully’s CFP: Six Pack of Winners; Week Four

Missouri -3 @ Indiana: These teams have met 10 times … with Indiana leading the series @ 6-2-2. The last time they lined up against one another was in 1992, the Hoosiers won that encounter 20-10! So nothing recent… Indiana comes rolling into the game at 2-1, beating Indiana State, 73-35 & Bowling Green, 42-10, while falling, on the road, to Navy, 41-35. The Tigers enter Indiana’s Memorial Stadium with a 2-0 slate, beating Murray State, 58-14 & Toledo, 38-23. While Indiana has the most impressive win (BGU) their lost to Navy is troubling as one considers the strengths of Missouri when compared to the Midshipmen. Sully’s CFP Game Simulator likes Missouri in six of the eight categories assessed, including scoring 39-35 & turnovers 1.1 to 2.5. Sull’s CFP says: take Mizzou and Give the Hoosiers the 3.

Utah @ BYU-7: The Holy war Cometh! The tern Holy War was coined to depict the cultural differences between the two Utah schools; BYU is owned & operated by the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints while Utah is a public university owned and operated by the State of Utah! The teams have played 94 times with the Utes leading the series 56-34-4. Utah has a current win streak of three, including last year’s, 24-21, victory  at Utah’s Rice Eccles Stadium. BYU rolls into the game @ 1-1, with a somewhat surprising loss to Virginia, 19-16 and an equally to more surprising win over Texas, 40-21.  The Utes head to Provo with a 2-1 record, boasting wins over Utah State, 30-26 & Weber State, 70-7, their lone loss was to Oregon State, in OT, 51-48 this past weekend. Sully’s CFP Game Simulator  the game a tie in the eight categories it used to determine a winner … 4 a piece! The last time the Utes were in Provo, 2011, they won, 54-10, other than that blow out … the games have been close, 2009, 26-23 BYU in OT, 2010, Utes 17-16, & 2012, Utah 24-BYU 21!  Sully’s CFP says BYU wins … but does not cover … Take the Utes and the 7!

San Jose State @ Minnesota -5:  These teams have not met in the past five years. SJSU enters the game with a 1-1 record, beating Sacramento State, 24-0 & while falling to highly regarded Stanford, 34-13 ! Minnesota awaits the Spartans with a 3-0 mark, the Gophers have beaten Las Vegas, 53-21, New Mexico State, 44-21, & Western Illinois, 29-12. While SJSU has a loss, their is no question the best opponent these teams have lined up against is Stanford. Sully’s CFP Game Simulator likes the  Gophers in 6 of the 8 areas measured, including a projected score of, 30-19, in favor of Minnesota.  in a related matter,Jerry Kill, the Gophers’ Head Coach, suffered his fourth seizure since taking over the high pressured job @ Minnesota He has returned to practice and will be on the sideline for Saturday’s game. Sully’s CFP says: take the Golden Gophers @ home and give the 5 points!

Utah State @ USC 6.5: The SC fans are getting creative in their method of communicating their displeasure with Head Coach, Lane Kiffin. They’re painting Kiffin all around LA in designated Fire Lane areas. Pretty cleaver! USC is 2-1 thus far this season and their play has been far from inspiring, beating Hawaii, 30-13, suffering a bad… really bad by SC standards, to Washington State, 10-7, before finally playing a solid game against BC, 35-7! While Utah State is currently 2-1 & coming off its best season in years. Their only loss this year is /was a nail-biter, to in-state rival, Utah, 30-26. The Trojans and Aggies have not play in the past four years. Sully’s CFP Game Simulator likes USU over USC in 5 of the 8 categories. Sorry, not buying it…. SC had over 500 yards vs BC last week, while holding the Eagles to under 200 total yards. Their Back!! Sully’s CFP says: Take the Trojans and give BC the 6.5!

Purdue @ Wisconsin24: Purdue is a hard team to figure as they can be very good one day and really bad the next. Last year they played OSU & ND to the wire… 2 teams that won 24 regular season while experience zero losses. Then give up 44 points to Michigan & Minnesota, 41 to Marshall, 38 to the Badgers, & 58 to Oklahoma State. One never knows what one will get from them, so I would not touch the Badgers & the -24. Purdue lost 42-7 o Cincinnati , struggled big time, with an FCS team, Indiana State, 20-13 and them outplayed ND until to 4th quarter … allowing the Irish tio score 21 points in the final period! Wisconsin … well that is a different matter, they are going to score, score often, and run the ball against this Boiler defense. The over is 47.5 … to low. The Badgers enter the game at 2-1, do to last week’s confusing loss to ASU, 32-30 …. yet, they did begin 2013 with two impressive wins vs inferior talent. In other words, impressive because …  should hammer… & …did hammer! The Badgers can/ may cover the 47.5 by themselves! Look for Wisconsin to pound on an undersized Boilermaker defense with their physical & explosive run game.! Sully’s CFP says, take the over …  & have No Worries!

Kansas State @ Texas -3.5 I am not sure if Mack Brown looks older or just tired. This current version of a Longhorn football team look more more like pretenders than the contenders they have been in days gone by… The Horns have been hammered in consecutive weeks, first by BYU, 40-21 & then Ole Miss, 44-23, after beating New Mexico State, 56-7 on opening day. Kansas State is rebounding from an opening day shocker… North Dakota State beat them, 24-21! Since then they have pounded Louisiana Lafayette, 48-27 & U-Mass 37-7. This is Texas’ last chance to salvage their season,  a loss here and their opportunity to win a Big 12 championship ( if they even have one) will all but vanish. That said, Texas has more talent on their roster then any team on their schedule, at least on paper. So the question is …. do they defend Texas Memorial Stadium, their Coaches’ Job and what little is left of their football identities? Given their opponent this week, a team long on skill and short on athleticism ….. Sully’s CFP says: Take Texas & give Bill Synder’s team the 3’5

Sully’s CFP is currently 9-9 vs the Spread

Sully’s CFP: Six Pack of Winners; Week Three

TCU -3 Over / Under 62 @ Texas Texas (Thursday Game): The Last time TCU was in Lubock, they led 21-0 in the 2nd quarter and ended up on the low end of a 70-35 tail whipping; Tech outgained the Frogs 371-3 and scored 56 unanswered points in the 4th quarter. This marks the 56th time these two programs have met, but only the third since their days together in the old Southwest Conference! Texas Tech enters the game @ 2-0, with wins over SMU, 41-23 & Steven F. Austin, 61-13, while the Frogs are 1-1, falling to LSU, 37-27 & beating SE Louisiana, 38-17. TCU’s QB, Casey Pachall, is out for several weeks after injuring his arm in Saturday’s game. Trevone Boykin played QB for the Frogs most of last year when Pachall was out do to alcohol related issues The Red Raiders beat TCU, 56-53 in OT last year, in Fort Woth. The over under in this game is 62. Sully’s CFP says take the Over as both of these teams can & will score.

UCLA @ Nebraska -5: This is a battle between two historic programs, one from the PAC 12 & one from the Big Ten. The Huskers are 6-2 vs the Bruins, in spite of falling in the Rose Bowl in last year’s game, 36-30. UCLA has played one game to date, beating Nevada, 58-20 @ home, while Nebraska is 2-0, surviving Wyoming, 37-34 & pounding Southern Miss, 56-13 both games were in Lincoln. At 5, this is really close to a pick ’em game, as the Huskers are getting at least three for being at home. Sully’s CFP says take UCLA and the points in Lincoln.

Bowling Green @ Indiana -2.5  .. Over/under 63.5: Bowling Green returned 19 straters from last year’s team and have hit the field at a sprint to start the 2013 season. The Falcons handled Tulsa, 24-6 and then outscored Kent state 41-22. Meanwhile, Indiana hammered Indiana State, 73-35 and was outscored by Navy, 41-35. The over /under is 63.5 ….. To this point, the Hoosiers seem interested in only playing offense and are doing so a high level. Defense is simply something they line up in…. Sully’s CFP says take the Over … as these teams can & will score & score often come Saturday!

Wisconsin @ Arizona State -6: Neither one of these teams have played a quality opponent in this very young season. The Badgers have shut out U-Mass, 45-0 & Tennessee Tech, 48-0, while ASU blanked Sacramento State, 55-0. Bucky & the Sun Devils have scored a combined 148 points and have given up a total of zero points in their first three games. This game pits strength against strength, Wisconsin’s offensive line, led by, Kyle Kostigan, Rob Havenstein, & Ryan Gory vs ASU’s Defensive line featuring, All-American, Will Sutton,  … and Jaxon Hood, & Davon Coleman. Sully’s CFP says: 6 is to many, take the Badgers and the points!

Tennessee @ Oregon -27.5 .. Over / Under 70: Tennessee is under new leadership … and it is showing. The Volunteers are getting back to national prominence under Butch Jones’ leadership …attendance was 97,169 in its first game and the Vols have scored 96 points in their first two games pounding Austin Peay, 45-0 & Western Kentucky, 52-20. Oregon is also off and running, scoring 125 points in their first two games, hammering both Nicholls State, 66-3 & Virginia, 59-10.. The weather in Eugene is 80 & Sunny … Both offenses will flurish in the sunshine…. Sully’s CFP says: take the Over!

Alabama @ Texas A&M -7.5: College Station will be rocking as the Tide rolls into town! The two time defending champs lost one game last year on their way to the repeat… @ home to the Aggies, 29-24. The question here is … do you like the “bad boy”,  Johnny Manziel and his ability to extend plays with his eyes down the field on receivers or Saban & Co. with their bye week to prepare for this year’s “game of the century”? Neither team looked like they belong in this game based on their performances thus far. While Alabama beat Virginia Tech, 35-10, they ran & passed for the grand total of 206 yards, while A&M gave up 31 points to Rice & 28 to Sam Houston. Not the numbers that you look for in your champions! Ok .. first game for Bama & A&M was playing in sure things (as always we’re talking …. on paper … anything can and will happen in the real world)  and both clubs are/have been focused on this game… but not what one would expect given their respective talent levels. That said, both teams lost significant players from their offensive lines to the NFL… the effect seems greater on the Tide … as they rushed for only 96 yards vs Va Tech, while the Aggiues rushed for over 200 yards in both of their games. Let’s say the problem for the Tide is/was more related to Va Tech’s defense … than Bama’s O-Line & A&M’s success was more about who they were playing (Rice & Sam Houston) as well. What about these teams ability to stop the run… Bama gave up 153 yards to the Hokies while A&M gave up 306 rushing yards to Rice & 240 on the ground to Sam Houston. The rushing numbers are a big concern for A&M… if the Aggies can’t stop the Owls on the ground, how in the world do they stop Bama’s running attack?  Look for Alabama to control the ball on the ground with RB, TJ Yeldon and a reved up offensive line … keeping Manziel in the one place he can’t hurt you … the bench. Sully’s CFP says take the Tide and give A&M the 7.5

Sully’s CFP: Six Pack of Winners; Week Two

Cincinnati -7.5 @ Illinois: The Illini & Bearcats met in 2009, Cincy jumped out to a  28-7 early lead and held the Fighting Illini at bay the rest of the way, winning, 49-36. That game was played @ Cincinnati’s, Nippert Stadium. In that game, the Bearcats scored 3 TDs in 5 plays and Illinois never recovered. The Illini opened with Southern Illinois, an FCS team, last week and survived the Salukis, 42-34, while Cincy blasted Purdue, 42-7! The Bearcats did turn the ball over three times, these missteps were overcome by the Bearcat’s defense, who forced 4 TO’s (2 INT & 2 fumbles) from the Purdue offense. U of I has lost 10 straight to BCS opponents, look for this trend to continue. Take Cincy & give the Illini the 7.5 !

Bowling Green -7 @ Kent State: Bowling Green has dropped three straight to Kent State, including a 31-24 loss a year ago at Perry Stadium, BGU’s home arena. Bowling Green hammered Tulsa last week, at home, 24-6, while Kent State struggled with Liberty, an FCS team, 17-14. BGU outgained Kent in last year’s tilt, 445 to 319 and though the series began in 1920, this is the first time the Flashes have beaten the Falcons three in a row.  Sully’s CFP says: this streak is over, take BGU and give the 7 points to the Flashes.

Texas -7 @ BYU:  Is Texas back? Will Mack Brown (HC) be back? All good questions to be answered beginning this week. The Longhorns are 1-2 vs BYU and the last time they were in Provo (1988) , BYU pounded the Horns, 48-13. BYU is coming off a tough loss to Virginia, 16-19, while Texas demolished New Mexico State, 56-7, last week. This is an important game for BYU as they do not want to start their season 0-2; that said, it is a desperate game for Texas, if they are to have the season their talent says they should have in 2013. Texas won the last time the teams played, 2011, a 17-16 escape in Austin. Sully’s CFP says .. the Eyes of Texas are upon the Mormons .. Take Texas and give the Cougars the 7 points!

ND @ Michigan -3.5: In seven of the last nine games between these Midwestern powers the underdog has prevailed. The last four have been decided by a grand total of 18 points. The Wolverines had beaten the Irish 3 straight going into last year’s game, 38-34 in 09, 28-24 in 010, & 35-31 in 011. The Irish had to lead in each of these games with less than a minute to play and yet, managed to lose all three! Last year, Michigan turned the ball over 6 times and lost the game by a mere 7 points, 13-6.  This past week, ND, beat solidly, but did not dismantle, an overmatched Temple club, 28-6; while Michigan hammered an in state opponent, Central Michigan, 59-9, in the “Big House”! The Wolverines looked to be quicker than the Irish in last weeks games, but we do not know enough about their respective opponents talent levels & skill sets to know for sure. History says take the points and the “Dog’. Sully’s CFP says: ND’s defense defends a slim lead late … Take the Irish & the points!

Arizona -10 @ UNLV: The Wildcats have played the Rebels only once, 2001, leading UNLV 31-7 in the 4th quarter … called off the dogs and won, 31-21! Arizona played in the Las Vegas Bowl in 2008 against BYU, so they do have experience, @ least as a program, of playing in Sam Boyd Stadium. UNLV is 1-4 when hosting teams from BCS Conferences, but they have a history of playing them close, in fact, the average score at half time is 12 to 12! Last week, Arizona hammered an FCS team, Northern Arizona, 35-0, while UNLV was blasted by Minnesota, 51-23, at TCF Bank Stadium. Arizona’s Head Coach, Rich Rodriguez is in his second year at the school, looks & feels like a better fit for his style of play than Michigan. On average, Rodriguez wins four more games in his second year than he wins in his first year (West Virginia, & Michigan). That said, this march toward four more wins begins Saturday… Sully’s CFP says: take the Wildcats and give the Rebels the 10 points!

Florida -3 @ Miami: This may be the most intense game of the day, as Miami is ready to make a statement to anybody that will listen that “we’re back” and Florida, who lost 4 of the last 5 to Miami, but won the last one in 2008, 23-8, is determined to keep the Hurricanes relegated to their second class citizenship status. What is on the line on Saturday is recruiting access in Florida & the Southeast in general, Miami is wanting to challenge the SEC dominance of the ACC . (Clemson is leading the way … wins over LSU & Georgia), & Florida bragging rights are all up for grabs. Look for all kinds of extra-curricular activity, as emotions will be high in this battle for Florida, at least phase one, as FSU will have a say in who emerges on top in the Sunshine State. Last week, Florida beat Toledo, 24-6 while Miami man-handled Florida Atlantic, 34-6. Miami returns 18 starters, including QB, Stephen Morris & All American candidate, RB, Duke Johnson. Florida returns 10 starters, including QB, Jeff Driskel & D-linemen, Dominique Easley.  Sully’s CFP says: take Miami & the 3 points @ home!

Sully’s CFP is currently 3 & 3 against the spread after last weeks games!

FCS has its Day vs FBS

The Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) awards up to  63 scholarships(they may give fewer, but not more, & maintain their good standing in the FCS ranks) in their respective football programs, while the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) must give 85 scholarships to maintain their membership in that division of the NCAA. Clearly, when a club from the FBS takes on a FCS Team, they have the advantage of  22 more scholarship athletes on their rosters. That said, the results from this week’s games seem to fly in the face of reason, as the FCS team’s won 8 games on opening weekend. Let’s start at the top with conferences that make up the Bowl Championship Series (BCS)  and then move on to the four conferences & Independents that are in the FBS but not part of the BCS.

SEC: Only two of the fourteen teams from the Southeastern Conference took on a FCS opponent; Tennessee & Missouri. The results are in line with what one would expect, the Volunteers hammered Austin Peay, 45-0, while Missouri pounded Murray State, 58-14! The SEC obliterates its 2 FCS opponents, 103-14!

Big Ten: Two clubs from the league, Illinois & Indiana, played host to two squads from the FCS. The Illini took on an in-state opponent, Southern Illinois, and struggled to a 42-34 victory. While Indiana ran all over, another in-state opponent, Indiana State, scoring 70 points, but give up way to many points, 35, to the Sycamores. Neither one of the Big Ten teams performed very well in these games. However unimpressive, the Big Ten goes 2-0 vs the FCS!

Big 12: Four Big 12 were in action Saturday against FCS Teams and the results were a shocking, 2-2 against these 63 scholarships programs. Baylor performed as one would expect, they blasted Wofford, 69-3, while West Virginia struggled to a hard fought, 24-17 victory over William & Mary. Then, another in-state tilt, as Northern Iowa surprised Iowa State, 28-20, @ Jack Trace Stadium, home of the Cyclones. Now for the upset of the day, defending Big 12 champion, Kansas State fell to two time defending FCS champion, North Dakota State, 24-21. If you go to the Blog, the Big 12 preview, written on February, 23, Sully’s CFP predicted this result!

ACC: The Atlantic Coast Conference scheduled four FCS Teams on opening weekend and beat all four and for the most part, did so solidly. Wake Forest man-handled Presbyterian, 31-7, Duke destroyed a Durman, in-city opponent, North Carolina Central, 45-0, while Georgia Tech demolished Elon, 70-0. The only ACC team to struggle was Boston College, surviving Villanova, 24-14. The ACC handled FCS competition with relative ease!

PAC 12: The West Coast Boys took on 3 FCS Teams with typical results, Oregon wasted Nicholls State, 69-3 and Arizona steamrolled Northern Arizona, 35-0. Then came the “what” ,,,  Oregon State, the 25 ranked team in the AP’s Top 25 was shocked by Eastern Washington, 49-46.  The PAC 12 finished 2-1 vs the Football Championship Subdivision!

AAC: (Former Big East) This league is in transition and trending the wrong way. While they will be with the powers of college football (in the BCS) for one more year, it is unlikely they will remain in an elite position for the 2014 season. Case in point, they took on three FCS teams and not only lost to two of then… they got hammered, pounded, and slapped up! Houston started the AAC out on the right foot, blasting Southern 62-13, then, disaster; U-Conn lost to Towson, 33-18, and South Florida was annihilated by McNeese State, 53-21! The AAC,  in search of respect, may have lost all credibility, by going 1-2 vs FCS programs, in the first week of the season.

FCS goes 5-13 vs the FBS/ BCS. They usually win 4 to 6 games against BCS opponents in a year .. never recall a week like this where they win 5 games in a single week-end!

MWC: The Mountain West went 2-1 vs their FCS foes. Air Force beat Colgate, 38-13 and San Jose handled Sacramento, 24-0. Their lone conference loss was experienced by San Diego State, at the hands of Eastern Illinois, a 40-19 tail whipping.

C-USA: The conference took on two FCS programs, Middle Tennessee beat Western Carolina, 45-24 and Tulane beat Jackson State, 34-7. Conference-USA went 2-0 in its match-ups vs the FCS.

MAC: Ball State beat Illinois State, 51-28, Eastern Michigan stopped Howard, 34-24, & Kent State beat Liberty, 17-10! The Mac, while going 3-0, played in 2 very competitive games.

Sun Belt: The SBC played against three FCS opponents, but did not fare well, as they went 1-2 against them. Georgia State lost Samford 31-21 and South Alabama lost to Southern Utah, 22-21. Their lone win was provided by Arkansas State vs Arkansas Pine Bluff, 62-11!

The FBS Independents: Did not play an FCS Team in week one!

The Non-BCS, FBS Conferences played played 11 games against FCS opponents and finished 8-3.

Overall, the FCS won 8 games against FBS competition: 1) Northern Iowa beat Iowa State, 28-20, 2) North Dakota State shocked Kansas State, 24-21, 3) Eastern Washington outscored Oregon State, 49-46, 4) Towson stopped U-Conn 33-18, 5) McNeese pounded South Florida 53-21, 6) Eastern Illinois ran past San Diego State 40-19, 7) Southern Utah held off South Alabama, 22-21, & 8) Samford moved past Georgia State, 31-21!

FBS 21 wins vs FCS 8 wins in 29 games. This is by far the best the FCS has done in recent years. The irony to this is the Big Ten and others will stop playing FCS teams in 2015!
