Sully’s CFP: Six Pack of Winners; Week Five

Navy -3 @ Western Kentucky: These teams have met twice in the past five years, 2009 & 2011, both Navy wins, 38-22 in 09 @ home & 40-14 in 011 @ Western KY. Navy sails in to Bowling Green at 2-0, with wins @ Indiana, 41-35 & at home vs Delaware 51-7. Western Kentucky is currently 2-2, having beat Kentucky 35-26 & Morgan State 58-17 while falling to Tennessee 52-20 and South Alabama 31-24. Sully’s CFP Game Simulator favors Navy in 6 of the eight categories assessed, including the projected score, Navy 39 Western Kentucky 28. Sully’s CFP Says: Take Navy and give Western Kentucky the 3 points!

South Alabama @ Tennessee -19.5: South Alabama is a relative newcomer to the FBS ranks. A current member of the Sun Belt Conference, USA is playing in its second full season as a member of the SBC and the FBS. Last year they won one game, beating Florida Atlantic, 37-34 in 2 overtimes, and won their biggest game as a SBC member on this past September 14, beating Western Kentucky 31-24. This recent win over WKU, who beat a SEC team, Kentucky, has sent a message to the Volunteers, be ready to play .. as USA is improving under their Head Coach Joey Jones’ leadership. The timing of this game could not have come at a worse time for the Jaguars.  Their recent win over an WKU, coupled with Tennessee getting hammered by Oregon 59-14 & a 31-17, passing by Florida, has left Butch Jones’ TU team in a foul mood. The Vols will cover the 19.5 points … no worries Sully’s CFP says: take Tennessee and give USA the points!

Stanford -9.5 @ Washington State: Mike Leach is improving this team, no question about that.  They are currently 3-1, with an impressive win over a struggling Southern Cal team! That said, any win by a WSU team over an USC unit …. is impressive, irrespective of what else may be going on …. especially when considering the recent history of these programs! On the other hand, Stanford is not struggling and enters the game as one of the nation’s best college football teams. Their dismantling of  a very good defensive team, Arizona State, 42-28, is a clear indicator that they can compete at the highest level. Sully’s CFP says: Take Stanford and give WSU the 9.5!

Ole Miss @ Alabama -16.5: The 3-0 Rebels come to Tuscaloosa to take on the nation’s #1 team, the 3-0 Crimson Tide of Alabama. The Tide has won the last four meetings, 2009, 22-3; 2010, 23-10; 2011, 52-7; & last year, 33-14. Bama covered the 16.5 spread in each of these wins, with the lone exception being 2010’s 23-10 victory. This year, Ole Miss has survived a good Vandy team in Nashville, 39-35, dismissed an FCS opponent, SE Missouri, 31-13 and then hammered Texas, 44-23! The Rebels defense can run with Bama’s receivers and the loss of offensive linemen Barrett Jones, D. J. Fluker & Chance Warmack has negatively impacted the Tide’s ability to control the LOS in the run game. Sully’s CFP says: Bama wins but does not cover, take Ole Miss and the 16.5!

Virginia @ Pittsburgh -6: These teams have not played in the past five years. Pitt was in the former Big East and is playing in its first season as a member of the ACC. The Panthers have won two in a row, beating New Mexico 47-29 & Duke, 58-55, and this after getting pounded by Florida State 41-13 on opening weekend. Meanwhile, Virginia comes in at 2-1 having beat a very good BYU team 19-16 to begin their season, then got hammered in week two by Oregon 59-10 and last week did the pounding, beating Big South team VMI, 49-0! Sully’s CFP says: take Virginia and the 6 points!

Oklahoma -3.5 @ Notre Dame: The Irish are a stunning 9-1 vs the Sooners. The teams hooked up last year with ND winning by a deceptive 30-13 score … the game was tied early in the fourth quarter @ 13 before the Irish put 17 unanswered points on the board. Oklahoma comes to South Bend with a 3-0 mark, with wins over ULM 34-0, West Virginia 16-7 & Tulsa 51-20 … all at home. This is the first time that OU has had to play in front of a hostile crowd, while the Irish played at Purdue (news flash … the Boilers do not like the Domers) and at Michigan, in front of 115,000 angry Wolverines. ND is 3-1, beating Temple 28-6, Purdue 31-24 & Michigan State 17-14! Neither team has an impressive win this year & the Michigan loss is looking bad based on the Wolves barely surviving Akron 28-24 & U-Conn 24-21! Sully’s CFP says: take the Irish and the 3.5 @ Notre Dame Stadium!

Sully’s CFP is currently 14-10 vs the spread!
