Phil Steele’s Top Ten

  1. Georgia: Steele thinks UGA will be the 1st team to 3 peat since Minnesota (1934-1936)
  2. Clemson: A surprise pick this high, yet Steele thinks the D-line can be rebuilt & Cade Klubnik has the talent @ QB to get it done
  3. Michigan: Veteran QB (JJ McCarthy), 2nd best O-line in the country, the nation’s best Combo @ RB (Corum & Edwards) & easy NC Schedule
  4. Alabama: Return only 5 starters on each-both side of the ball, yet Bama has the nation’s best roster & will contend for the CFP Title
  5. Ohio State: Outplayed UGA & should have been in the 22′ Title Game, return 14 starters, yet face the nations tuffest slate (ND, UM, & PSU)
  6. Penn State: QB Drew Aller, great RB tandem (Singleton & Allen), Nation’s 5th best D, Rose Bowl win in 22, & UM @ Home! PSU’s year?
  7. USC: What would have happened if QB C Williams did not get hurt in 2022? Trojans are better in 23, yet face ND & Oregon on the road?
  8. Florida State: FSU hit the portal hard the past few years & went 10-3 in 22′. What’s next; An ACC championship & CFP appearance in 2023?
  9. LSU: In Kelly’s 1st year, the Tigers beat Bama & won the SEC’s West, QB Jayden Daniels & 14 starters are back for the 2023 season!
  10. Notre Dame: Freeman opened 0-3 @ ND, then 9-2 in the next 11, including a win in the Gator Bowl. Now enter WF QB, Sam Hartman!

Athlon’s Top Ten

  1. Georgia: UGA returns 13 starters, new QB Carsen Beck is the twist, the Dawgs need Beck to work out & given the talent around him he will have time to develop!
  2. Michigan: The Wolvers have beaten OSU 2 in a row & made back to back CFP appearances. UM is aiming higher this year & have the talent to make that happen!
  3. Alabama: For the 1st time in a while, Bama has question marks heading into 2023. Two new coordinators (OC Tommy Reese & DC Kevin Steele), a new QB (TBD), and the D has to replace Will Anderson. Given all that, the Tide still has the best roster in the country!
  4. USC: I, for one, was surprised to see the Trojans ranked this high and in-front of OSU! Caleb Williams is widely regarded as the best QB in the country; the WR room terrific, and the RB room is talented! However, all that said, DC Alex Grinch’s defense has to improve!
  5. Ohio State: The Bucks have the best receivers in the all the land, great RBs, and a solid O-Line! QB is a battle between two 5 stars, Kyle McCord & Devin Brown. OSU’s D-Line & LB’s are top 10 units, while the secondary is ranked 12th! The Bucks need to toughen up!!
  6. LSU: Brian Kelly has already had an impact on the Bayou Bengals, beating Alabama, 32-31 in OT, arch rival Florida, 45-35, and winning the SEC’s West Division (best division in college football). The Tigers will challenge for the SEC title and perhaps beyond in 2023!
  7. Florida State: The Seminoles open their season against LSU (FSU won this game a year ago, 24-23) and need a win if their dreams of an CFP berth are to be realizes. Their hopes ride on their rising stars QB, Jordan Travis, RB, Tray Benson, & WR, Johnny Wilson!
  8. Penn State: QB Drew Aller, a 5 star recruit, is about to step into the national light as a budding star @ PSU, alongside RBs, Nick Singleton & Kaytron Allen, and 1st team All B-10 talent on all three levels of their defense (DL Chop Robinson, LB Abdul Carter, & DB Kalen King
  9. Washington: Former Indiana QB, Michael Penix Jr, is widely regarded as the 2nd best QB in the PAC 12, behind only SC’s, Caleb Williams. Penix’s has two of the best receivers in the conference, Rome Odunze & Jalen McMillan. Yet their defense must improve if they are to win the PAC 12 over the likes of USC, Utah, & Oregon!
  10. Utah: Kyle Whittingham’s program always seems to be playing second fiddle to the likes of SC, Washington and Oregon, even though the Utes have won the PAC 12 the past two years! Utah has 13 starters returning and feature one of the best Offensive & Defensive lines in the Conference!

Lindy’s Top Ten

  1. Georgia: UGA lost 15 players to the NFL draft in 2021 and still won the CFP play-off in 2022! With 14 starters back for 2023 season, the Dawgs are looking for a 3rd!
  2. Michigan: Lindy thinks this is Harbaugh’s best team! With QB JJ McCarthy, RBs Blake Corum & Donovan Edwards, WR Cornelius Johnson, & the top rated O-line in the country; for the 1st time, in a long time, the Wolves can win games by outscoring opponents!
  3. Ohio State: Ryan Day is 45-6 (has the best winning percentage in college football) @ OSU in 4 plus season’s (3 losses were in the CFPs, 1 to Oregon, & 2 to Michigan) yet Day will be under the dismissal gun if he losses for a 3rd time in Ann Arbor! Seems somewhat Brain-dead, since the Bucks are 32-0 vs the rest of the B-10 in the Day era!
  4. Alabama: Not sure why ESPN and others insist on saying UGA has replaced Bama as the nations best college program! The last 8 times the Riptide & the Dawgs ‘have had it out in the junkyard’; Alabama has won 7 of the battles (2008 thru 2022)! Look-it, the SEC West is better the SEC East and so it follows, that Bama has a tougher row to hoe than UGA to get to Atlanta. Let’s see what happens if they both punch their respective tickets to “Peach City” in 2023!
  5. LSU: Kelly is a win 1st kind of coach and he knows how to win! In his 1st year with the Tigers, he won the West Division (toughest division in all of college football) and played for the SEC Title in A-Town! In my opinion, this is the one team that shows ‘no fear’ of Alabama, in fact, makes one wonder about Bama hiring Tommy Reese? Who knows more about how Kelly thinks then Reese? Just a thought!
  6. Florida State: The Seminoles 2023 season is on the line in week one, (September 3, Sunday) when they venture into Orlando’s Camping World Stadium, to take on LSU. If they beat the team from Death Valley, and then travel to the Other Death Valley, (Clemson) and beat them on September 23rd. They have opened the door to a possible trip to the CFP!
  7. Washington: Somewhat shockingly, Lindy Sports, likes the Huskies to prevail against the likes of Utah (do not play in the regular season), Oregon (@ home), and the mighty Trojans of SC (@ the Coliseum) in the PAC 12 race of 2023! This reasoning is centered around, QB Michael Penix (former IU QB) and a very talented defense!
  8. Penn State: Coming off an 11-2 season, a Rose Bowl win, and 2 RBs (Nick Singleton & Kaytron Allen) that rival or surpass, OSU’s (TreVeyon Henderson & Miyan Williams) & Michigan’s (Blake Corum & Donovan Edwards) are set for a run at the B-10 East Division! They travel east to take on the Bucks in the ‘Shoe’ and then welcome the Wolverines, to, a white out in Happy Valley!
  9. Texas: If the Horns can win in Tuscaloosa (Alabama September 9), they have a legitimate shot to run the table and make their 1st CFP appearance. That said, from a talent perspective, that statement is true almost every year for the Longhorns. It is time for ‘Horns’, as far as them shouting “Texas is back” to step up or shut up!
  10. USC: Lincoln Riley & Caleb Williams were the critical pieces for SC’s 11 win season in 2022! Both are back in 2023 and looking for more of everything, they did not win the PAC 12 Title, they did not make the CFP, & they lost their bowl game to Tulane, 46-45! If the Trojans are going to achieve their 2023 goals, Alex Grinch’s defense will have to preform @ a higher level, as their schedule in 2023 is tougher than the previous year’s!
