Sully's Big Blog! Commentary on College Football, Weekly Games, And Strange Statistics!

5 most Interesting Games in Week Eight!

5. Notre Dame 4-0 @ Pitt 3-3: ND is ranked 3rd in the country, yet struggled in their last 2 outings against talented, but underperforming teams. The Irish beat Florida State (2-3), 42-26 & Louisville (1-4), 12-7. They now face a Pitt (3-3) team, that has one of the best front 7’s in the country and a team that beat Louisville, 23-20. The Panthers started the season 3-0 but have lost their last three. Two of their three losses, were by a one point (NC State, 30-29 & BC , 31-30), and their other loss was to Miami, 31-19! Sully’s College Football Page is putting the Fighting Irish on upset alert, as they travel for the 1st time this year and face the best run defense they have lined up against in 2020!

4. Nebraska 0-0 @ Ohio State 0-0: Everyone in the country is anxious to see OSU play for the 1st time in 2020. The Bucks are regarded, by many, as having the best team in the country and a QB, Justin Fields, who is a Heisman favorite! Nebraska angered many in the Big Ten offices this summer, by not walking the ‘party line’ when the B-10 put the 2020 season on hold. They talked about playing as an independent (while, the nation’s leading independent, ND, joined a conference, life is a funny ole dog), the Huskers implied that they were stepping up, while the rest of the conference was sheepishly, heading for cover! When the revised schedule came out, the Husker’s divisional crossover games were against Ohio State & Penn State. It should be noted, that Nebraska was scheduled to play both the Bucks & the Lions in 2020. Their 3rd East Division opponent, that they were to play, Rutgers, was dropped from their schedule. As a result, the Huskers will play the 3 best teams in the B-10 in 4 weeks! OSU week 1. Bucky in week 2 & PSU in week 4, ouch! Nebraska’s AD, Bill Moos, wonder aloud if Nebraska was being ‘punished’ for not getting in line with the rest of the B-10! He stated that Nebraska needed a scheduling break to get back to their glory days and the B-10 would benefit from a powerful Nebraska program. Somehow, I just can’t see or hear a Tom Osborne saying “we are being asked to play to many good teams”! This game should be fun!

3. Iowa 0-0 @ Purdue 0-0: I am anxious to see the Boilers tandem of extremely talented WR’s, perhaps the best duo in the B-10, Rondale Moore & David Bell. These guys are something else’, they two can change the flow of a game 180 degrees in an instant. Iowa had won four straight in this series (2013 thru 2016), however, the Hawks have lost 2 of the last 3 games, 24-15 in 2017 & 38-36 in 2018! Purdue’s Coach, Jeff Brohm, is anxious to get back on schedule in his rebuilding of the Purdue program (4-8 in 2019)! While the Dean of B-10 Coaches, Kirk Ferentz, looks to continue the Hawks winning ways. His teams have won 47 games in the last 5 year.

2. Auburn 2-2 @ Ole Miss 1-3: Auburn HC, Gus Malzahn, is 42-24 in the last 5 years and has beaten the ‘bullies of college football’, Alabama, 2 of the last 3 years (2017, 26-14 & 2019, 48-45)! Yet Malzahn’s ‘seat’ is perpetually ‘hot’ and no different this year. Auburn’s loss last week to South Carolina (a team that last beat Auburn in 1933, that’s right, 1933), 30-22, & the whippin UGA (Georgia) put on them in week two, 24-6, has Gus in a familiar place, the sauna! Put simply, Gus needs to win this game! The Lane Train (Lane Kiffin) put shocking numbers on Alabama, 647 total yards, 9 of 17 conversions on 3rd down, and 48 points, That said, the Rebels did lose to the Tide, 63-48! Ole Miss also put up big numbers against another of the SEC’s big boys, Florida, 613 total yards, converted 9 of 13 3rd downs, & scored 35 points. I should mention the Rebels also lost that game, 51-35. Lane’s comment to the media, after the Bama game was, “I thought they played defense in the SEC?’ You got to love that guy! The one thing we know for sure is that Lane’s team does not play D, evidenced by the fact, that they have given up 51, 41, 63, & 33 for a total of 188 points in 4 games or 47 PPG. So from Lane’s perspective, he is definitely right about defense in the SEC, he hasn’t seen much while playing none! Looking forward to this game!

1 Alabama 4-0 @ Tennessee 2-2: The Volunteers started the season 2-0 ( they beat South Carolina 31-27 & Missouri 35-12) and then lost on consecutive weekends, UGA, 44-21 & UK (Kentucky) shockingly, 34-7! UT losing to UK, at home, was a surprise, loosing by that margin, 27, suggests that something else is going on in that locker room! I am most interested to see what kind of energy the Vols bring into this game! As now, a Title Tide is heading straight for Knoxville. Bama just put a whipping on UGA, 44-21, and that means Saint Nick has been on his team all week. He has been reminding them when they sit on the porcelain stool, they aren’t making fug ripple. They better focus on Tennessee, forget UGA, & this week’s game details! Finally, I believe this is the 23rd attempt, of one of Saint Nick’s former assistants, to take down their old school boss! Good luck Jeremy Pruitt!

Enjoy the Games!
