Non AQ Conference Updates Week 4

WAC:

The headliner is Louisiana Tech, 2-0 at Illinois, 2-1… do not be shocked… surprised Ok… but not shocked … if Tech gets this done in Champaign. This is the best team in the WAC and the Bulldogs scored 112 points in its first two games against Houston 56-49 and Rice 56-37 (Rice beat Kansas, 25-24, the Saturday before this game the Tech loss).

Utah State 2-1 takes on Colorado State 1-2 ( CSU’s only win this season was against a winless Colorado). The Aggies are a wide right field goal in the Wisconsin game (a 16-14 loss) from being 3-0.  Last year this game ( An Aggie loss 34-35 to CSU) went into OT before USU missed a 2-point conversion in the second overtime!

San Jose State 2-1 travels down the coast to play San Diego State 2-1. In the past, the Aztecs would have been a solid to a heavy favorite…. not so much now! The Spartans are playing their best football in years and their 20-17 loss to Stanford… (given Stanford’s 21-14 win over USC) coupled with two wins over UC Davis 47-13 and Colorado State 40-20 speaks to this improvement. A year or two ago they could /would have lost to either UC Davis or CSU and no one would have been even remotely surprised ! This a very important game for SJSU …..  they will be looking to showcase their product…  as they look for membership in  another FBS conference….. Mountain West for starters… where SDSU plays!

Idaho 0-3 puts out the welcome mat for Wyoming 0-3. The Vandals last beat the Cowboys in 1921 – you got it – 1921! –  and are 1-4 against them overall. For reasons known but to God … Idaho’s AD scheduled LSU (63-14) and to add insult to injury …. the Vandals also lost to Eastern Washington 20-3, a good FCS team …. but an FCS team non-the-less (85 scholarships to 63 scholarships should seal the deal). Wyoming has also lost to a FCS team Cal Poly… and played Texas 37-17 loss ….. so this game should….. by what these teams have experienced ..  is interesting not only on paper…. but to see who prevails on the field.

New Mexico State 1-2 hosts in-state rival New Mexico 1-2  … The Game is known as the Rio Grande Rivalry and New Mexico leads the series 66-31-5. That said, NM State has won two in a row and both New Mexico schools enter the contest at 1-2.

Texas State 1-1 plays host to Stephen F. Austin (an FCS team out of the Southland Conference) … and this may well be their last shot at a win until they play UTSA (University of Texas at San Antonio) on November 24th.

UTSA (University of Texas San Antonio) 3-0 only one of these wins have come against an FCS team (South Alabama)  and today they face a NAIA team in NW Oklahoma State University. The Roadrunners should have no issues with the Rangers (86 scholarship players to 36 NWOSU) .
